Week of 5/27/08

This week: We worked on our King’s Pathway project where we designed pathways using pattern blocks for an amusement park. The final project will include three ”steps” of the pathway, a t-table for each shape and the total (including a formula and the 100th step) and a graph for each shape and the total. If students finished early, they had to look up how much each stone costs and estimate the cost of the entire pathway. This project was due at the end of the day on Friday, May 30th.

Next week: We will work on a PBS project where students will be making videos regarding how they should and should not behave to show students next year. This project will be due by June 4th. There will be an awards assembly and an athletic assembly next week. The 8th grade celebration will be on Thursday June 5th.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Best,

Ms. Murawski

Week of 5/19/08

This week: EOG time! We did a little more review for the EOGs, took the EOGs and moved on to a project called the King’s Pathway where we connect patterns to T-tables to graphs to functions!

Next week: We will continue to work on the King’s Pathway project. Should students finish early, they have extensions to work on. If they finish the extensions, another project will be assigned.

Have a great weekend and relax! The EOGs are done!

Best,

Ms. Murawski

Week of 5/12/08

This week: We did EOG review using the released test items and qwizdom controlers and we continued to plug away on functions and inequalities.

Next week: EOG time! We will do a little more review for the EOGs and move on to a project called the King’s Pathway where we connect patterns to T-tables to graphs to functions!

Have a great weekend and rest up! The EOG’s are here!

Best,

Ms. Murawski

Week of 5/5/08

This week: We learned about Standard Form of an equation and how to change from it and to it. We reviewed for a test on Functions and Equations and then took the test on Thursday. On Friday, we learned how to find x- and y-intercepts of an equation. On Thursday, released EOG test items for Number Sense were given as homework. We continued to work on EOG prep during Academic Coaching.

Next week: We will continue to “cram” from the EOGs. We will review how to graph from an equation. I will introduce inequalities and how to graph linear equalities. We will continue to work on released test items for the EOG. This is it! It is crunch time!

Week of 4/29/08

This week: We practiced how to write an equation given slope and a point on the line. We learned how to find slope given 2 points without graphing and how to write an equation given 2 points. On Friday, we just worked on our review packet due to a shortened schedule as a result of the High School trip. Below is a link to the notes I gave on May 1st. I was able to do this thanks to the new technology we have recently received in our classrooms.

Writing an equation given 2 points Notes

Next week: I will introduce students to the Standard Form of an equation and how we can go from slope-intercept form to standard form and vice versa. We will review for a test and have a test on Thursday of next week. Test topics are solving for a variable, verifying solutions to equations, writing an equation from a point and slope, finding slope from 2 points and writing an equation given 2 points. Then we will move on to relating all of these forms of equations to graphs.

Have a great weekend!

Week of 4/21/08

This week: We learned to solve for a variable and took a quiz on it. We reviewed the slope-intercept form of an equation and how to graph from it and how to generate an equation given slope and y-intercept. We learned how to verify if an ordered pair is a solution to a linear equation. And, we ended the week with an introduction to the point-slope form of an equation.

Next week: We will practice using the point-slope form to generate equations. We will learn the formula for finding slope and be able to generate an equation using just 2 points on the line. If there is time, students will be introduced to the Standard Form of an equation. We will continue to do EOG preparation during Academic Coaching time.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Ms. Murawski

Week of 4/14/08

This week: We took a practice EOG test, worked on review of geometry objectives and finished the solving equations unit by taking a quiz on solving equations by clearing fractions. We continued to work on projects. I ask for your patience with these projects as they are taking a long time to complete. The due date has been extended until every group has a chance to finish.

Next week: We will learn how to solve for a variable, review functions and use these topics to help us manipulate function equations. I pushed this off a week so we would have some more time to finish the projects, but I just cannot push it off anymore.

I apologize for not being more available for after school help this week, but I have had some personal issues. I can pretty much stay every day until 3:30. After April 28th, I can stay until 4:00 PM again. Thank you for your time and have a great weekend!

Week of 4/7/08

This week: We took a quiz on solving complex equations using the distributive property. A project on solving complex equations was assigned. Actually completing this project will take a long time as we only have one Airliner (this translates writing into the computer). As a consequence, only one pair can go at a time and it usually takes 1 pair a whole class period as getting used to the Airliner takes up a lot of time. It is a slow process but we will get it done! Then, I introduced solving equations by clearing fractions. We practiced this Thursday and Friday.

Next week: We will have a quiz on solving equations by clearing fractions. This quiz, and the completion of the project, will end the unit on solving equations. Next unit, which we will start next week, we will use what we know about equations and functions to manipulate and generate function equations.

Please check out the new Accelerated Math page! It is a great way to stay informed as to your students progress!

Take care and have a great weekend!

Week of 3/31

*Check out the new page entitled “Accelerated Math”

This week: We reviewed finding the reciprocal, combining like terms, the distributive property, and then we practiced solving equations with these topics. Thursday was the PBS celebration. Friday we practiced even more complex equations and used a graphic organizer to help us walk through each step.

Next week: I will assign a project where students will have to record a verbal explanation along with an electronic video of their work of the steps they took to solve a complex equation. I will give probably 2-3 class periods to work on this project and finalize it.  We will move on to clearing fractions from equations before we try to solve them. This will end the unit on equations. However, the next unit will take what we learned about equations and apply it to solving for a variable and to manipulating different function equations. The next unit after that will be on inequalities which is also very similar to equations.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Ms. Murawski

Week of 3/17/08

This week: We learned how to solve equations by combining like terms and we reviewed the distributive property. Then we reviewed for the Quarterly Exam and took the Quarterly Exam.

The week we get back from break: We will refresh our memories of combining like terms and the distributive property. We will learn how to solve equations that involve the distributive property and we will learn how to clear fractions from equations before solving. I will also assign a project where students will verbally have to explain the steps they took to solve a complex equation and how they checked it. We will use the website voicethread.com to do this project.

Thank you for your time and have an amazing break. I will be off to Florida to spend time with family.

Best,

Ms. Murawski
